the truth about orthotics’ – no one persons foot is ‘ideal.’ orthotics are used to realign and support the posture of the foot to the ‘ideal’ position to prevent or treat symptoms. Used to treat anything from shin splints, to bunions, to limb length inequalities to back pain.

Orthotics are inserts which are placed inside footwear to support the foot’s natural structure.  Your feet are the base of support for your entire skeleton, so they may affect the entire body if they are not positioned correctly.

Orthotics are used to treat a broad range of aches and pains which may occur in the feet, legs, knees, hips or even lower back. These pains occur when repetitive strains are placed on the body causing the tissues to become inflamed, torn or fractured. Orthotics are used to correct and maintain correct foot posture resulting in reduced pressure elsewhere in the body.

There are different types of orthotics which include:

  • flexible
  • semirigid
  • casted
  • performed

Preformed orthotics provide conservative control as most often the device is flexible. Casted orthotics are manufactured from plaster impressions of the foot following a thorough bio-mechanics assessment.

Here at Achilles Heal Podiatry, we prescribe and dispense many various forms of orthotics but not before an extensive case history and examination of the patient have been undertaken.

If you have any queries regarding orthotics, please feel free to contact our friendly staff for further information.
